Guinevere in Waiting

This is a personal project inspired by the legends of Camelot, King Arthur, and Arthur's wife Guinevere. The figure in this painting possesses a certain melancholy beauty that I find very intriguing. I wanted her to convey sorrow, hope, and a resigned contentment all in one. And I leave it up to the viewer to guess who she's waiting for to return. King Arthur, or Sir Lancelot?

I often reinterpret the meaning of words or phrases for sources of inspiration. This is a painting where I've taken the term "Cat Burglar" quite literally. Although the setting is somewhat dark, it has a light-hearted and humorous nature. It's a true melding of digital techniques—some 3D, photo manipulation, and (of course) painting.

Originally I made a version of this painting with traditional oil paints, but decided to re-invent and re-explore the image using digital methods to the point where it is an entirely new work. I created it with Ballistic Publishing's EXOTIQUE series in mind.

I don't necessarily consider this a "political" piece of art. However, it is intended to represent the more military-minded America that exists today. I figured the best way to show that would be to use one of the most renowned symbols of the United States. I made 2 versions of this painting: one in traditional oils on canvas, and this Digital version. Overall, I think this one surpassed the traditional painting by leaps and bounds.

I used a setting sun environment to create some dramatic shadows that parallel the viewpoint/vanishing point perspective. There's a good deal of action and movement in the image, giving it the feel of an actual image caught on film. There's an enormous amount of detail going on here with numerous digital techniques and subtle effects.

It's a humorous work that successfully merges strong realism and fantasy. I created it using dozens of photographs I took at the local automobile dealership, and merged all of those with illustrative painted elements. This was one of those works that test the limits of patience.

I wanted to make a painting that would have a very narrative feel to it. So to better capture that idea, I wrote a short story and painted this to represent one of the pivotal scenes from the tale. You don't really need the manuscript to appreciate the painting. Here the main character is confronted by a monster in an eradiated cavern. I think my use of color helps establish strong mood and atmosphere. The splatter marks I added also add a uniquely beautiful effect. I created it with PAINTER using a wacom tablet.
Ironically, the character turned out to be more affable than malevolent. And I think that worked out in my favor. The painting took a long time to paint, particularly because of my insane decision to paint virtually every hair on the character's head.

Greater Mankato (The River City)

This is a digital matte painting I made of my hometown Mankato in the future. It's filled with numerous local landmarks and details representative of the present-day region. One reason I chose blue as the dominant color is due to the city being a part of Blue Earth County. I used an enormous amount of reference material to get a high level of realism, and of course did a lot of painting. I think it achieves a strong perspective and presence, and portrays an interesting mix architecture existing in harmony with nature.
